President Goodluck Jonathan has received with much sadness and ``a deep feeling of great national loss'' news of the passing away of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in the United Kingdom. A statement issued by his spokesman, Reuben Abati, in Abuja on Saturday said President Jonathan joined Ojukwu's family, the government and people of his home state, Anambra, the entire Igbo people of Nigeria and his friends, associates and followers across the country in mourning him. The president urged them to be comforted by the knowledge that ``Chief Ojukwu lived a most fulfilled life, and has in passing on, left behind a record of very notable contributions to the evolution of modern Nigeria which will assure his place in the history of the country.'' The statement said Mr. Jonathan believed that late Ojukwu's immense love for his people, justice, equity and fairness forced him into the leading role he played in the Nigerian civil war. He commended the departed's commitment to reconciliation and the full reintegration of his people into a united and progressive Nigeria in the aftermath of the war. I am delighted to be here with you today at the formal opening of the 17th Nigerian Economic Summit (NES#17), an event organized jointly by the private and public sectors, represented by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) and the National Planning Commission (NPC). 2. I am even more elated that you all agreed to come and dialogue, and partner with us, in our effort to transform our blessed country. Our Administration is committed to sustaining this successful partnership, which is why I have directed that the Public Sector participation be broadened. I trust that the representation from the private sector will continue to be very robust. 3. This year’s Economic Summit is unique in several respects. It is the first to be held since the inception of the current Administration, in May this year. It is also coming at a critical time in our political and economic history, following on the heels of our 51st independence anniversary. It is even more important when you consider the fact that public expectations are high. We are fully aware that concrete progress needs to be made in terms of national development, hence we have introduced measures, including the establishment of a National…

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has said Nigeria was the ideal place for any serious businesses interested in investing in Africa. President Jonathan made this statement while receiving Saudi Arabian businessman and investor, Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin AbdulAziz Alsaud of Saudi Arabia at the State House Abuja, on Thursday, November 10. “With a population of 167m, a robust economy, extensive oil and gas reserves, a largely unexploited petroleum downstream sector, opportunities in such strategic sectors as agriculture, energy and mining, with a robust plan by government to transform the nation, Nigeria is the ideal place for serious investors”, he said. The President told Prince Alwaleed that Nigeria is essentially a green field, in the areas of hotels, real estate, infrastructure, energy and agriculture, adding that the consensus of the participants at the Nigeria Economic Summit Group was that the country would become Africa’s largest economy in the medium term. He also spoke about the banking sector’s capacity to accommodate more investors, while there were also huge opportunities in telecommunications. President Jonathan thanked Prince Alwaleed for his interest in Nigeria, and directed the Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission to provide the necessary support to further facilitate investment relations between Kingdom Zephyr Africa…
